How to Pay for In-Home Senior Care

A guide to veteran pensions, family-directed Medicaid programs (IHSS, CDPAP, ALTCS), and long-term care insurance. Each program decides eligibility. assistedhelp.com does not.

Programs to ask about

Three questions to see which offices or policies to contact. This is not an eligibility decision.

What to ask about: With these sample answers, ask the VA about Aid & Attendance and ask your insurer about LTC reimbursement. assistedhelp.com does not approve benefits.

What a visit log stores

When a visit is logged, assistedhelp.com stores clock-in and clock-out times and, when the phone allowed it, a location. A payer, Medicaid, or the VA may reject that record. assistedhelp.com does not submit claims and does not promise approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Medicaid spend-down and does it apply to home care?

Medicaid spend-down, also called a share of cost or a medically needy pathway, lets someone whose income is above the Medicaid limit qualify by subtracting medical expenses — including home care — until what remains is under the state threshold. It is not one federal rule. New York, California, and Arizona each run their own programs (CDPAP, Medi-Cal/IHSS, and ALTCS). assistedhelp.com does not decide eligibility. Confirm spend-down with the state Medicaid office before counting on it to pay a private caregiver.

Can Medicare pay for non-medical in-home caregiving?

Standard Medicare Parts A and B only cover short-term, intermittent skilled nursing or therapy following hospitalization. However, many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans now provide supplemental home care allowances (SSBCI) that cover custodial care hours.

How do I submit assistedhelp.com records to my LTC insurance provider?

After a visit you can open the log from your family dashboard and print it. It includes hours and, when captured, the phone location. Ask your insurer whether they will accept that log. assistedhelp.com does not format it as an official claim.

Are caregiver payments tax deductible?

Sometimes. If a physician certifies a chronic illness and a need for help with at least two ADLs, some expenses may count as medical expenses once they exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income. Ask a tax professional. assistedhelp.com does not prepare returns.
